Gee thanks! I have to narrow it down to just one scene or line! Hard to choose.
I'd have to go with the tease scene in chapter 5 where they are getting to explore each other and then you see, "Aw, hell, Red." Caden Groaned.
"Like that?" She punctuated her question by fingering his nipples again while lightly tugging the other.
I just loved Hearts in Darkness! My favorite scene is where Caden is vulnerable to "Red" with his fear of confined spaces...makes the big, bad boy not so bad afterall.
i haven't read heart of darkness yet, but just after reading the favorite lines in the 2 comments before mine, i'm going to have to go get it to read like now : )
Ooh, favorite tortured hero quality? That hard core self-discipline that makes him stick to his guns, even if his thinking is totally broken; he'll not cross the line to doing something he knows is wrong.
For me, its at the very end when they are spooning and he finally finds contentment in his life. *sigh* I adored this book.

I haven't read it yet, but did just buy it :D
Favorite tortured hero trait...hmmm... I guess I'd have to say how compassionate they can be, if only they find the right person to bring it out and inspire the healing.
I haven't read it yet but it sounds great My favorite hero trait is the fact that they don't giveup no matter what. Crystal

My favorite torched hero trait is their self discipline. They way the demand so much of them self! What I love even more is the way when the fall for our woman they fall hard break all the rules and get her by all means possible ;) Happy release birthday :)

Yay! I'm really loving your comments, guys!
@Poison Rose - I love making a strong man groan, don't you? ;)
@alicia marie - Yay! Love that!
@books4me - Oh, yes, I love when he tells her what happened to him! Thanks for sharing!
@crystal - yes, they're always so set in their tortured-ness! Gotta love an alpha male! ;)
Thanks again everyone! Good luck!
@flchen2 - loved how you said "even if his thinking is totally broken" - that's a great way to put it!
@Marika - oh, man, that ending remains one of my faves, although I'm possibly biased! ;)
@Buffy - Yay! Thank you! And, I like that trait a lot too.

Happy Book Birthday! I own a copy but haven't read it yet.
So my favorite tortured hero quality is the protective nature they have towards those they love. There is no way they want them to experience even the slightest bit of pain.
Thank you.

Happy birthday to Hearts In Darkness and congrats on all the success you've had with it! There were many lines and parts I liked, but the one that sticks with me is when Caden drops Makenna off at her place and drives off, but has to stop the car and come back. That rollercoaster of emotion - the hope of what might happen, the disappointment of him leaving, the thrill of him returning. I love when a story pulls you in and tugs your emotions like that. Thanks!
I actually have Hearts of Darkness but have yet to read it...terrible I know. But my favorite tortured hero trait is when they deny their feelings for the heroine. They may not admit how they feel to themselves but you'll be damned if someone tries to take her away from him. All hell will break loose!! Absolutely love it!!!

Haven't read HOD yet so my favorite trait is brooding alpha male :) he is always in a pissy mood and gets irritated that a woman makes him smile. Congrats on all your success!
I havent read this yet. I really need to! Sounds awesome! My favorite tortured hero trait? I love when there dark and brooding. They feel unworthy and unlovable. Watching how the hero opens up with the heroine, watching him 'come alive' at her attention. I love it! Thanks!! Happy book Birthday! Wishing you all the best!
shadowluvs2read(at)gmail(dot)com
I have not read HEARTS IN DARKNESS yet but my favorite tortured hero trait would be the way they feel like they are unlovable, not worthy of love. And of course their heroine proves to them that they are wrong :)
Happy Book Birthday! Hope the next year is even more spectacular for you.
June M.
Love the giveaway =) i´ve got the book on my TBR list and i´m looking forward to reading it!
My favorite tortured hero trait is the one suffering with guilt from some misunderstanding and not feeling worthy of love/friends/happiness *happy sigh* It´s soo nice when he finally admits and accepts some fluff in his life.
best wishes, Linda xo
My favorite tortured hero trait? I think that I could explain it with a name, Jason Staham as the Transporter. Just love him!
Thank you for the great giveaway and Happy release birthday!
Hi Laura!! Happy Birthday to one of the best books I've EVAR read!!! It's been a while but I recall that my fave scene (though really, the whole being stuck in the elevator plunged in darkness with a hunk and what follows after the rescue is my fave 'scene' lmao) was Caden describing his tattoo (please tell me there WAS such a scene lol for shame I should re-read it)
Totally loving your comments guys! Oh, just so many things to love about a tortured hero, aren't there??? And, yes, Camille, you're remembering correctly! :)
Melissa--I love that scene too and man was it fun and, er, hot, ahem, to write! ;)
Thanks for celebrating with me everyone! You're the best!
I haven't read your book yet but really enjoy the lines by the other commentators.
For me, I like how the tortured hero finally opens up to the heroine and confide in him.
Awesome giveaway, congrats on the mile marker!
Thank you so much for making this international :)
Vikki @ V's Book Life
My favorite tortured hero trait: emotional constipation.
I have not read it, but might go buy it in a few minutes. My favorite trait in a tortured hero is the muscles they get from working out in an attempt to subvert their anger.
Favorite part - His eyes dropped back to her. His mouth fell open. Makenna cocked an eyebrow. "I told you I would smack you." Loved this moment! Laughed out loud!
Congrats on all of your success, Laura... You really are an inspiraton. And I sincerly hope fortune continues to smile on you.
Happy Anniversary Hearts in Darkness! I love the scene when the lights come on and they really see each other for the first time. There are other things I liked, but I enjoyed the build up and anticipation to that scene.
Thank you for your generous giveaway opportunity!
This is just such an awesome giveaway! Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter!! =) I hope I get a chance to read the book!!!

@May - I love that about tortured heroes too!
@You're welcome!
@cupcake - LOL!
@Steph - *snort* yes, that's true, isn' tit?
@Erin - aw, glad you liked that! I did too!
@Sara - thank you so much for that!
@Sophia Rose - yes, that moment was so much fun to write! And she blurts out that he's freaking gorgeous! LOL Good pick!
Thanks so much everyone! You guys are making this so much fun!
Yay!!! Love this giveaway and Caden!!! This was the book that cemented me as a fan of yours. Congrats on the one year anniversary!!!
Oh yah,,,, my favorite scene is when they get a quick look at each other for the first time when the lights almost come back on. Second favorite, when he turns back around and goes back to her apartment.
I just bought the book, and haven't had a chance to read it yet. But my favorite thing is when the alpha dude is positive he's not good enough for the heroine. He wants her but keeps her at arm's length.\

I haven't had a chance to read Hearts of Darkness yet but It's on my list!
I haven't read your book yet. It's been on my to-read list. I really like how the hero never thinks he's good enough for the heroine.
This is such an amazing Birthday Bash! Thanks for the opportunity to win!
DeAnna Schultz
My favorite trait is when they beat themselves up for their past and struggles to get over it until they are faced with losing someone they love.
My favorite tortured hero trait would have to be courage.
I think my favorite trait is courage and bravery.
I'm really enjoying reading all your favorite traits and favorite lines, guys! Thanks so much!
Love, Love, Love Hearts In Darkness!
My favorite line occurs right after the kiss in the lobby of Makenna's bldg.
Caden says, "I've never...you're just...Aw, hell. I like you, Red. I want to be with you. I want you to argue with me some more. I want to lie in your arms again. I want to touch you. I...I just..."
WHOA!! That moment when your need and desire for someone overwhelms you to a degree that words escape you.
Congrats, Laura & Happy Birthday, Hearts In Darkness
There is so much I love about the tortured hero. I love how they think they don't deserve anything and just adore when they get their HEA. Love when they are brought to their knees by their heroine!
Got my copy and will be reading soon.
Thank you Laura for this giveaway.

@Cy - love, love, love that moment! Thank you for taking the time to share it!
@Phyllis--Thank you! Happy reading!
Good luck everyone! Y'all are just making my weekend!
I love tortured hero's. I think my favorite thing about them is how loyal they are to those who they love. They know what its like to be hurt so they take every care possible to avoid ever betraying and hurting anyone.

I loved Hearts in Darkness, favorite scene, The almost sex in the elevator.
I absolutely love Hearts in Darkness! My favorite scene amongst many throughout the story is when Caden dropped Makenna home and was about to leave but finally decided to turn around to tell (well rather show) her how he feels. I felt the intensity of that scene deep in my gut and it literally took my breath away.
That's a favorite of mine, too, Hai-Yen!
Good luck everyone! And thanks for celebrating with me!
I've got the book in my TBR list. Lined up for my next read!
Love the tortured hero's sense of honour; that he always does what he thinks is right then finds himself torn btwn what he thinks he should be doing & what he wants to do when he falls for the heroine!
Yay! Thanks Linda! And that's a great tortured hero trait! :)
I'd have to say its the sticking to his guns, even though its not going to go well for him, though in the end it always works out. I love tortured heros... makes them sexier and vulnerable.
i haven't read this book but iam putting it in my TBR list..
thanks for the giveaway,, congrats and success for you ^^
Thanks you a lot for making this giveaway international
my favorite tortured hero quality/trait... i love how they can be very protective and in the same time not conscious enough about themselves
all the best
Thanks for the giveaway! I haven't read this yet, so my favourite tortured hero trait how loyal and protective they are, and how they start to become less tortured once they fall in love. It's really sweet to read. Thanks!
Woot! Thanks for all the new comments/entries, guys! Good luck!
I haven't read Hearts in Darkness yet, but I sure do love the cover ;)
I love how a tortured hero though may be rough and callous on the outside, often has a heart of gold.
Wow, to just limit it to one favorite trait? I love how compassionate they are when they find the one and open up to them.
Froggy
Favorite tortured hero trait: Once they allow someone into their very sheltered heart it is forever and with fiery passion.
Geez...not sure about tortured but I have so many. Dante from the Maker's song series. Barrons from KMM's fever series. I really like Bones from Night Huntress series but I don't think he's tortured...lol. Spade was though and I like him too =) I could go all day so I'll stop there..lol Thanks for such an awesome giveaway. I love it all.
Since I'm just now re-reading it and can't remember exactly where it is in the book, I'll say that when she just begins to explore him, his face, etc. The way it makes him feel, well, and her too. It's like the build up....I need to find the time today to get reading this again!
Sebrina
My favorite trait of a tortured hero is their ability to overcome their past.
I haven't read Hearts in Darkness yet but after reading some of these comments I most definitely will! My favorite tortured hero trait would be their strong will to never give up and to not be afraid to live and experience everything they can in life :)
I haven't read the book yet, but I like the lines & scenes selected by other posters. I always like it when a tortured hero feels incredibly guilty about something, but then is able to release that guilt & get on with his life & relationships.
Sorry that I haven't read the book but it is now on my TBR list.
Thanks for the great giveaways.
I love the emotional pull put on the hero when he is in a difficult situation. The push pull that is shown make the hero even more real.
