Six Sentence Sunday #7

Howdy sixers!  Thanks to everybody who comes back each week to read my latest excerpt.  This week, we're still with Caden and Makenna from Hearts in Darkness.  And, hmm, they're out of the elevator now:

When Makenna’s eyes dropped down to where they were joined, his eyes followed.
“Fuck,” he murmured as he watched his wet cock slide in and out of her.
“We look…good…together,” she panted softly.
“We look so fucking good together,” he rasped. He gazed back up at her face. “You’re so damned beautiful.”

Hehe.  Just makin' sure y'all're awake.  Read the other sixers' excerpts:  here!

Some news, if you don't mind my sharing!
1) Consider dropping in on my Twitter Website Launch Party this Thursday 3/31 from 9-11:30 pm EST.  Use the #launchlaura hashtag.  I'm launching a new website and blog and will be giving away prizes each half an hour during the party!

Sixth Six Sentence Sunday Selebration!

I'm so excited this Six Sentence Sunday because, this week, I got release dates for both of the manuscripts I've been excerpting since I joined this Sunday shindig six weeks ago. In honor of the one releasing first, I've chosen another excerpt from my contemporary romance Hearts in Darkness, about two strangers who get trapped for four hours in a pitch-black elevator.  Despite the lights, you might say Caden and Makenna have hit it off:
Available 4/20/11!

“I feel so good with you.”
“Mmm…can I make you feel even better?” he rasped between slow, dragging kisses up her neck.
Makenna’s head grew dizzy from the promise of what he was offering. She couldn’t believe she was even considering it, but her body screamed at her for thinking she might turn him down. She nodded her face against his.
“Tell me, Red, you gotta say it out loud. I can’t see your face or your eyes, and I don’t want to make any mistakes here.”

Before I offer a little news, please let me first encourage you to visit the other Six Sentence Sunday excerpts by clicking here.  And follow the #sixsunday hashtag on twitter! Comments on the Six Sunday blurb are always read & appreciated! :)

My announcements:
1) Hearts in Darkness, a contemporary romance, will release 4/20/11 from The Wild Rose Press!
2) Forever Freed, a paranormal romance, will release 5/20/11 from The Wild Rose Press!
3) My cover for Hearts in Darkness is up for a cover contest, and the winner gets some promo opportunities, which would be great given the 2-releases-in-a-month-promostravaganza I'm about to undertake LOL. I'd be mighty appreciative to anyone willing to vote: 1 vote/person, and leave a comment to vote. Click here!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

So, we're all 100% Irish on St. Patrick's Day, but I've got quite a bit of the real deal flowing through these here veins.  My Irish ancestors migrated to colonial America in the eighteenth century, settled in western Pennsylvania where they built up quite a landed empire, and then became prominent in the Indian trade.  The head of this empire ended up marrying one of the daughters of Iroquois chief Joseph Brant and fathering a number of children with her.  Though a historian, I'm not big into genealogical research myself, but I do enjoy knowing this bit of our family's distant history.

So, today, celebrate your Irishness (real or borrowed!), and kiss an Irish person--they're good luck.  Even if they're not quite 100%.

What proportion Irish are you? :-)

Six Sentence Sunday 5: Men. With. Tattoos.

Hello there lovelies! Welcome back for my 5th turn on the #sixsunday merry-go-round. Today, I thought I'd change things up and introduce you to Caden Grayson and Makenna James from my upcoming contemporary romance, Hearts in Darkness. At the beginning of this book, the power fails and traps the two in an elevator, killing the lights and all. Neither had paid much attention to the other beforehand, so they get to know each other during their 4-hour entrapment free of preconceived notions based on physical appearance. Here, they've been asking one another to describe what they look like:

“Like buzz-cut shaved or like baby’s-bottom-soft bald?”
“Give me your hand,” Caden offered. “You can feel for yourself.”
Makenna gulped down her excitement at finally getting to do what she’d been dying to do most of the night. Her sight gone, she longed for another way to make a more tangible connection to Caden. And between the sex talk—G-rated though it might’ve been, and the plans for a date, and the whispering, and the feeling his body was close to hers, Makenna’s body was starting to vibrate with a heady sense of anticipation that made her stomach flutter and her breath come a little faster.

And, yes! There will be Romance Trading Cards for this book - scroll down to March 9's post to see them all!  I have to share Caden's at least:
Men. With. Tattoos. = Epic. Win.
Don't forget to check out the other Six Sentence Sunday posts and follow the #sixsunday hashtag on twitter.  Comments are read enthusiastically and appreciated! :-)  You might, for example, share if you have any tats.  Jus' sayin'.

Thanks for reading!

The Lovers, the Dreamers, and Me

This total blast from the past snuck up and took root in my brain just now and I'm hoping sharing it with you will help it from playing on loop in my head! LOL Funny thing is, for a long time when I was a kid, this was my favorite song. I won a talent show in, like, fourth grade singing it. In middle school, I got the nickname Kermit (which I secretly loved--come on, admit it, first, someone giving you a nickname when you're, like, 12 is cool, and Kermit is cool, so it was total win for me!)

And, I have to say, there's a lot to admire in the lyrics of this song. Maybe my early love of the sentiment and ideas in this song foreshadowed my becoming a romance author. Because these are romantic words if I've ever heard them, not as in romantic love, but as in the faith and belief that something greater is out there.

Hit play, you know you want to, and sing it loud and proud:

The Rainbow Connection (1979)
Why are there so many songs about rainbows
and what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions,
and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it.
I know they're wrong, wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Who said that every wish would be heard
and answered when wished on the morning star?
Somebody thought of that and someone believed it.
Look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us star gazing
and what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

All of us under its spell. We know that it's probably magic.

Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that called the young sailors.
The voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it.
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.

Introducing: My 2011 Romance Trading Cards

www.romancetradingcards.com/
I'm so excited to be part of this new group promo activity to create romance trading cards to be traded at the RT and RWA conferences (and elsewhere).  Thanks to Jeannie Lin for brainstorming the idea and organizing the promotion.  I created three cards apiece for FOREVER FREED and HEARTS IN DARKNESS, and I'm totally in love with them.  Designer Kimberly Killion of Hot Damn Designs made them for me and I couldn't be happier. (I decided to leave buying/learning PhotoShop to another time, when, you know, I actually have time.)

So, without further, ado, here are my cards:

FOREVER FREED (COVER WILL APPEAR ON FRONT OF ALL 3 CARDS...):

HEARTS IN DARKNESS:
If you're not able to attend the conferences or other events where I'll appear but would like a set, contact me. I'm sure we can work something out! ;)

Which card is your favorite and why?

Emergency Eyes Needed: Knight Agency Speed Dating Round 1

Hi folks--I threw my hat into the ring for the Knight Agency's Speed Dating / New Talent Search and got picked for the first round. I have to submit my first 3 pages by noon tomorrow (3/8) and hoped to get a little feedback on them before I do. These pages are from my women's fiction, THE FANTASY LIFE OF A MIDDLE-AGED WIFE. Feel free to leave comments in the comment function or email me at laurakayeauthor@gmail.com. Any comments at all would be greatly appreciated!  The first 3 pages = @ 1,000 words.

Begin Excerpt:

We’d been having sex for approximately six minutes, according to the alarm clock on my nightstand, which meant it would soon be over.

My husband groaned as he moved against me.  I was in the position Jason usually preferred—on my hands and knees, facing away from him, with no opportunity for kissing or eye contact.  He shifted his hips and pounded into me and I moaned in pleasure and frustration, knowing as good as it felt I wouldn’t be able to get there in this position, at least not as fast as I’d need to.

Concentrating hard, I clenched my eyes and sorted through my trusty catalog of erotic fantasies and settled on the image of Jason moving over me, cradled between my thighs, arms clutched around my shoulders and his body hunched over mine as he devoured me in a kiss and ground his pelvic bone into mine again and again.

“Mmm, Jas,” I moaned.  Closer…

The fantasy shifted.  Jason had me pinned against a wall, arms under my knees holding me open as he stood and thrust between my thighs.  His muscles bunched and rippled between us as I held tight to his thick shoulders. Oh, closer.  Then he was sitting underneath me on the couch, big hands guiding my hips up and down as his pubic bone rubbed my clit and his hot mouth tormented my nipples.

So close.  Gonna work this time!  Just a little more.  Just a little—

With a grunt, Jason stilled and his erection pulsed inside me.

Damn, damnDouble damn.  I groaned and hung my head.

He patted my bottom.  “Mmm, Sash, that sounded good.”  He squeezed my hips and pulled out.

Huh?  Does he think?  Nooo.  Really?

I flopped down onto my stomach, still panting and aroused—and definitely not satisfied—and pulled the sheet up over me.  Part of me wanted to yell, “Hey, Clueless Joe, my turn!”  But time constraints always chased the big O away, and we were already pushing our morning schedule.  Not to mention, my asking would burst his I-just-satisfied-my-wife bubble.  I didn’t want to risk a fight.

As he walked into the bathroom, my thoughts cycled through to my to-do list for the day:  defrost the lasagna for dinner, remind Lily to take her P.E. clothes to school, hit the gym for 45 minutes on the elliptical, dry cleaners, bank, work—we were still doing inventory today.  I sighed.  Maybe O could find a spot on the list this evening.

Ten minutes later, Jason walked out of the bathroom showered, mostly dressed, and looking fine as always.  Tall and trim with brown eyes and light brown hair, Jason’s athletic body still appealed to me the way it did when we’d met twenty-two years before.  He was less toned in the middle, and had just a touch of grey at the temples and laugh lines at the corners of his eyes, but somehow it all made him even sexier.  Why do men wear age so much better than women?

With a sigh I sat up, holding the sheet to cover my chest against the chilly air in our bedroom.  Decorated in browns and turquoise, it was my second favorite room in our house, next to our kitchen.  “Will you be late tonight?”  For the past two years, Jason had worked at his dream job—Community Relations Liaison for the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team.  He traveled a lot and often worked late, so I never knew what his schedule was going to be.

“Nah, I’ll be home for dinner.  Things should be calm for the next month or two while the players are off.”  He rooted through his closet.

“Okay, good.  I’ll make us a nice dinner.  Grace is bringing Lily home after choir practice, so we can eat around seven?”  I smiled at the thought of having Jason home for dinner for once—my whole day seemed brighter now.  Winter offered a needed reprieve from the seasonal demands of his job.

He nodded as he watched himself knot his tie in the tall framed mirror.  “Sounds like a plan.  What are you doing today?”

I smiled.  “Oh, well, Jenny’s opening the shop, but I told her I’d be there by noon.  I have some errands, and then I think I’ll go to the gym before heading in.”

“That’ll be good,” Jason murmured as he shrugged into his sports coat.  My favorite red tie lay smooth against his crisp white dress shirt.  Maybe I’ll wear it for him later, and nothing else.

I shook my head; it was going to be a long day if every little thing set me off like this.  I couldn’t help it, though.  In my early thirties I’d had a take-it-or-leave-it attitude towards sex most of the time—my limited time and energy seemed better spent on other pursuits, and Jason and I related in other fulfilling ways—but by my late thirties and early forties, I couldn’t get enough.  Whether it was my age or the invigorating effects of my recent weight loss or the incredibly hot romance series I’d found recently, I was ready for sex, well, pretty much all the time.  Jason didn’t always know what to make of my interest.

I slid out of the tall king-sized bed and padded across the thick pile of the soft Berber carpet.  I gave him a little naked hip shimmy as I passed and strutted into the bathroom.  He didn’t notice.  I rolled my eyes.  My body wasn’t perfect, but it was as good as it had been in a long while, and I was pretty proud of myself for finally getting off my butt.

Standing at the double sinks, I ran a brush through my hair.

“Okay,” he called from out in the bedroom, “I gotta go.  Talk to you later.”

I lowered the brush and rested my hands against the granite counter.  “Okay.  I love you.”

“You, too.”  His voice was distant enough that I knew he was already running downstairs.

I shook my head.  No kiss good-bye.  Again.

Catch Me If You Can Blogfest

So, today and tomorrow I'm participating in a blogfest (find all participants here) hosted by YA Author Kristina Fugate to get feedback on those all-important first pages of a work-in-progress manuscript.  About 35 authors will be posting no more than their first 550 words to see if they have what it takes to "catch you."

I am about to dive into a final round of revisions on my women's fiction, THE FANTASY LIFE OF A MIDDLE-AGED WIFE.  So, in that spirit, I thought it would be interesting (and nerve-wracking, natch) to see what y'all thought of the opening words of this manuscript:

Six Sentence Sunday 4!

Lucien Demarco b. Nov. 2, 1858
Modena, Italy

So nice to see everyone again on this fine Sunday. This week, another installment from Forever Freed, my paranormal romance for which I should shortly have a release date! Woooohooooo!  These sentences are from the moment Lucien catches an enemy vampire feeding from the human woman he loves...

Jacques roared in outrage and dropped Samantha as he whirled on me. “You always did know how to ruin a good time,” he spat.
The world went fucking red with my rage at the image of Samantha’s blood dripping off his fangs. All I could see was my maker, hunched in the darkness over Lena’s body, his crimson eyes and gory teeth flashing to me when I’d interruptednot again!
Jacques was standing too close to Samantha’s crumpled body to act rashly, but then he coughed and sprayed a fine red mist into the air.
“How ya feeling there, Jacques?” I sneered through sharp fangs as I stalked closer.
[Annnnd cue killer fight scene.... here. ;)]

Romance Trading Cards!

If I didn't already love historical romance author Jeannie Lin for teaching me book trailer making, now she's gone and come up with an awesome promo idea for the upcoming RT and RWA conferences--romance trading cards! Jeannie's set up all the logistics--a card template, instructions on how to set the cards up (see here), even found a designer willing to help or do the design for a small cost (see here).

I'm going to design cards for both Forever Freed and Hearts in Darkness and have already come up with what people/items the cards will feature:

 From Forever Freed:

Lucien Demarco (hero)
Samantha Sutton (heroine)
Olivia "Ollie" Sutton (Samantha's daughter, will be a rare card!)
Antoine Laumet (villain)
Lucien's violin

From Hearts in Darkness:

Caden Grayson (hero)
Makenna James (heroine)
Caden's dragon tattoo
The elevator (rare!)

When I get them created, I'll post so you can see the goods! Find me at the RWA to trade for these awesome playing cards!

How cool is this idea?
